The Red Wings look like they’re gonna be great this year!  Can’t wait to see Pat Borders grinding it out for the Sky Chiefs at Frontier Field!

Ha, in all seriousness, the Astros are having some slogan competition for this year and I have entered it.  The last few year’s, the slogan has been “Cheer for the good guys,” but in light of Pettite, Clemens, Caminiti and the rest of the Astros glitterati being found guilty of steroid use, something a little more appropos is in order.

“A return to class with Kevin Bass” - this slogan completes the two things I’m dying to see with this team - no more scumbaggery with the roids (even though they weren’t the only team doing it) and a return of my favorite Astro, Kevin Bass.  There’s no way in hell they’ll choose this one though.

I’ve also attached my favorite picture from the Steroids Saga below:ohwow.JPG

My Giants

I will admit that in the past 2-3 years my fanship has become less and less, which is why this year I’m not sporting a Jason Sehorn jersey or making a Giants cookie cake. But i will say that my history with Giants in the Superbowl has been extremely well-enjoyed. With the game set to kick off in a few minutes, lets take a look back at the Giants and me.
1987 - Giants 39 Broncos 20
I was asleep for this game.

1991 - Giants 20 Bills 19
I don’t think anyone has forgotten where they were when this game took place. At this point in my life, my devotion had reached its pinnacle, especially watching a Giants team go 10-0, lose 3 games and come straight back to win through the playoffs. In the NFC Chapionship, Leonard Marshall took Joe Montana out of the NFL for 2 seasons and the Giants won 7-3. Facing the incredible Bills, the game will go down in history as the best ever played. Take the league’s best offense and put them up against the league’s best defense, not to mention backup Hostetler going the distance. While Scott Norwood wasn’t completely to blame for the loss, he of course faced ridicule and hatred wherever he went. I was peeking from behind a chair at my house, 10 years old and full of hope when he missed. I will never forget the SI cover picture of Everson Walls, whose body language summed it all up. The next day before school my mother told me not to wear my Giants hat because of a possible bandwagon-charged theft at my expense. I stuffed it in my bag and put it on when I turned the corner. Go G-Men!!

2001 - Ravens 34 Giants 7
This game sucked. I never liked Kerry Collins at all and his performance in the game was fucking wretched. The Giants had like 5 turnovers and did not score an offensive punt. Cory and I were at ATO and I had a lot of homework still left to do. We spent the night searching for chairs and being introduced to every KDS pledge that thought I was in ATO. Of course I wasn’t, safely realizing after college how lucky I was that I never joined. I was embarrased for Kerry Collins, who after went to the one team that every NFL player goes to die; (Jerry Rice, Warren Sapp) the Raiders. I remember a lot of dudes after the game yelling, “who the fuck are the Ravens?” Obviously, the team that just waxed the Giants. The next day in Pete Bailey’s creative non-fiction class, he went on a rampage about the halftime show, claiming that it’s impossible to “cater to everyone” and that it was “ridiculous to even try.” He was really upset. His fishing vest I think even absorbed a small crescent of sweat around the neck in his claim that “Aerosmith and N’Sync would not cooperate with each other.” I didn’t see it actually, because I get seizures whenever Nelly is on screen, so I made sure to skip the show when I heard the news.

2007 - Giants Patriots
I mean, come on. This is really going to be a great game. There’s only one thing I hate more than a shitty Superbowl, and that’s a shitty World Series. The Pats have a legitimate chance to solidify themselves as the greatest pro football team ever. That’s somewhat exciting, and I don’t find myself hating Patriot players as much as Red Sox assholes. What’s in it for the Giants, really? Eli has like 12 more seasons yet to go and in my estimation, the Giants are not on fire. I must refer back to my Frank Thomas question in regards to Jeremy Shockey’s. The guy broke his leg against the Redskins and didn’t play a single down in the Giants’ play-off run and won’t play today. If the Giants win, how does he feel about the victory? Does he consider himself a champion? Does he celebrate the win, knowing full well he played such a limited role throughout the better times? I leave it up to you.
Enjoy the game, I think it’s going to be a great one!
